What is dizziness and what causes it?
Dizziness is a symptom in which a person feels as if their surroundings are spinning or that they themselves are spinning. This condition is usually caused by a disorder of the balance organs in the inner ear or the balance center in the brain. Dizziness can be caused by a variety of conditions, including inner ear infections, Meniere's disease, vestibular migraine, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
How is dizziness treated?
Treatment for dizziness varies depending on the underlying cause of the symptoms. Treatment options may include medications (anti-vertigo medications, antiemetics), physical therapy and balance exercises, surgery (rarely needed), and lifestyle changes.
What is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and how is it treated?
BPPV is a common cause of dizziness and is usually triggered by moving the head into a certain position. Treatment for BPPV usually includes physical therapy techniques such as the Epley maneuver or Brandt-Daroff exercises. These maneuvers help the crystals in the inner ear settle into their proper positions and reduce symptoms.
