A New Era in Tonsil Surgery: The Thermal Welding Technique

Tonsil surgery… Op. Dr. Sezgin Bekdemir, an ENT specialist at the Private Ento Ear, Nose and Throat Surgical Medical Center, stated that tonsillitis is a common health problem, particularly among children, and can seriously affect quality of life.

He explained that tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils, located on both sides of the throat, become infected by viruses or bacteria. The condition manifests itself through symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, high fever, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Bekdemir said, “While acute tonsillitis can usually resolve within 7–10 days with medical treatment, chronic tonsillitis can lead to serious long-term problems due to its recurrent nature.”

Diagnosis and Treatment Process

Bekdemir stated that the diagnosis is made based on the patient’s symptoms, physical examination and, when necessary, additional tests. He said, “Supportive treatment is usually sufficient for viral infections, while antibiotics are used in bacterial cases. However, surgical intervention may be considered in cases involving frequent recurrences, complications, or enlarged tonsils that obstruct breathing.”

Reminding that traditional methods involve completely removing the tonsil tissue and therefore carry a higher risk of complications, Bekdemir continued:

“One of the techniques that has gained prominence in recent years is the Thermal Welding method, which results in an extremely low risk of bleeding. Since no sutures are required, wound healing is faster, and patients experience significantly less pain compared with conventional surgery. The operation takes approximately 30–40 minutes, and children can return to their normal lives within a short period of 3–5 days.”

He stated that the most important advantage of the method is that it minimizes the risk of postoperative complications and provides a safe recovery process. Emphasizing that tonsillitis, which is particularly common among school-age children, negatively affects both education and social life because of recurrent infections, Dr. Bekdemir said, “Thanks to the rapid recovery process following surgery performed with the Thermal Welding method, children can return to their classes and daily activities in a short time.”

Tonsillitis Should Not Be Underestimated

Emphasizing that tonsillitis should not be underestimated, Bekdemir said, “Untreated streptococcal infections can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, joints and kidneys. Therefore, early diagnosis and the selection of the appropriate surgical method are vital in cases of frequently recurring tonsil infections. In this respect, the Thermal Welding method stands out as a treatment option that improves patients’ quality of life while also offering surgeons a safe alternative.”
