Neck Lumps Should Not Be Ignored
Neck Lumps Should Not Be Ignored
Lumps felt in the neck are often perceived as simple swellings, but they can sometimes be a sign of serious health problems.
Dr. Nimet Özalp Devseren, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialist at Private ENTO Ear, Nose and Throat Surgical Medical Center, emphasized that neck masses can have a wide variety of causes and highlighted the importance of early diagnosis.
"Neck masses may result from enlarged lymph nodes, thyroid nodules, benign conditions such as lipomas and cysts, or infections," said Dr. Devseren. "Common illnesses such as colds, throat infections, or dental infections may cause temporary swelling in the neck. However, in rare cases, neck masses may be the first sign of head and neck cancers. Therefore, any lump detected in the neck—especially if it grows rapidly or persists for more than three weeks—should be evaluated by a specialist."
Hoarseness Should Be Taken Seriously
Although neck masses usually present as palpable swellings, some patients may also experience pain, tenderness, or difficulty swallowing.
Dr. Devseren stressed that hoarseness is an important warning sign, saying, "Symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, rapidly enlarging neck masses, or changes in the skin over the lump should never be ignored."
Diagnosis and Treatment of Neck Masses
Dr. Devseren explained that a thorough physical examination is the first step in evaluating a neck mass.
"When necessary, imaging methods such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biopsy are used to determine the nature of the mass. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Infection-related masses usually resolve with medication, while benign tumors causing symptoms may be surgically removed. Malignant masses may require surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy."
Early Diagnosis Is Vital
Dr. Devseren emphasized that early diagnosis not only increases the success of treatment but also helps prevent serious health complications.
"Lumps noticed in the neck should never be ignored. Even a small delay in seeking medical attention may lead to serious health problems in the future."
