Is a Swelling in the Neck Dangerous? Important Warning from a Specialist
Op. Dr. Ümit Filiz, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialist at Private ENTO Surgical Medical Center, stated that neck swellings seen in children and adults can have different causes.
BSHA / İzmir – Op. Dr. Ümit Filiz, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialist at Private ENTO Surgical Medical Center, stated that neck swellings in children and adults can result from various causes, emphasizing that painless masses that have been present for a long time and are gradually increasing in size should definitely be evaluated by a physician.
Filiz noted that swellings in the neck do not always indicate a serious disease, and emphasized that how long the swelling has been present, whether it is painful, and whether it is growing are important factors to consider.
Painful Swellings That Appear Within a Short Period May Be Caused by Infection
Filiz explained that painful swellings that appear within a short period, such as two or three days, may be caused by lymph nodes that enlarge following an infection. He also stated that certain infections in and around the mouth can cause lymph nodes to become enlarged.
“An aphthous ulcer that develops on the lip or inside the mouth, a tooth decay, a pimple on the cheek, or a tonsil infection may have caused the lymph node to enlarge,” Filiz said.
Pay Attention to Painless and Growing Masses
Filiz emphasized that different diseases should be investigated when a mass has been present for a long time, is painless, and continues to grow.
“A painless mass that has been present for a long time and is growing may have an underlying cause that needs to be investigated. Sometimes it may be related to the thyroid gland, and sometimes to the salivary glands. In some cases, it may also be a sign of cancer,” he said.
“Be Sure to Consult an ENT Specialist”
Emphasizing the importance of specialist evaluation to determine the cause of a neck swelling and provide the appropriate treatment, Op. Dr. Ümit Filiz advised:
“To establish the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment, you should definitely consult an ear, nose and throat specialist.”
