Is Supplementation Necessary for Children to Get Sick Less?

Dr. Süreyya Paksoy said that before vitamins and supplements, attention should be paid to healthy nutrition, sufficient sleep, and proper hygiene habits for children to get fewer infections.

Dr. Süreyya Paksoy, a Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist at the Private ENTO Ear Nose Throat Surgical Medical Center, stated that healthy nutrition, sufficient sleep, and correct hygiene habits should be prioritized before vitamins and supplements to help children get fewer infections.

Children getting sick frequently, especially during school periods, may cause families to turn to vitamins and supplements. Dr. Paksoy, who often hears the question, "Which vitamins and supplements should we give so our child does not get sick frequently?" emphasized the importance of healthy and balanced nutrition.

"I DO NOT RECOMMEND SUPPLEMENTS OTHER THAN VITAMIN D"
Addressing families' questions about vitamins and supplements, Dr. Paksoy said, "My answer is usually quite clear. Besides healthy and balanced nutrition and regularly using vitamin D from November 1 to May 1, I do not recommend any other supplements."

Dr. Paksoy expressed that simple habits can be applied in daily life to help children get fewer infections and gave five important recommendations to families.

5 RECOMMENDATIONS TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM INFECTIONS
Dr. Paksoy emphasized the importance of hygiene habits, especially in school environments. She advised that children should avoid touching everything and everywhere. She recommended avoiding contact of hands with mouth, nose, and eyes as much as possible because germs can enter the body through these routes.

She stated that children should wash their hands several times a day with soap or use hand sanitizer when necessary. She also advised avoiding close contact with friends showing symptoms like runny nose, cough, and fever.

"DON'T LET THEM STAY UP LATE, LET THEM SLEEP ENOUGH"
Another point Dr. Paksoy emphasized was sleep. She said children should not stay awake until late hours and should sleep for an age-appropriate duration, underlining the importance of sufficient sleep.

Paksoy stressed that fewer illnesses in children are not due to a single product or supplement, saying, "The thing that helps children get sick less is not a syrup or supplement; it is good nutrition, adequate sleep, and proper hygiene habits."
